This period is covers the "Antebellum" period, the Civil War, and the reconstruction period. The main focus is on the social, political, and economic division among Americans and how those divisions led to Civil War. It could be argued that the fervor of "Manifest Destiny" did more damage than it did good. As sectional tensions grew, national crisis was no longer avoidable, and a Civil War had to take place. After the war was over, the reconstruction of the nation becomes a half-hearted, half-finished effort that left the South in worse condition than it was.
